ballet - franck leibovici, 2008

from desertmed project, directed by armin linke. paris, grand palais, july 13th 2008 - giulia di lenarda, franck leibovici, armin linke.

welcoming ceremony of the arrival of the heads of state in the mediterranean sea by the president of the french republic.

by recapturing the procession under the simple form of a continuous film, becomes visible a ballet, both mechanical and hypnotic, which toss around the actors between detailed protocols, diplomatic tensions, sporty performance and shamanic trance.

the expression "subjective event" should not be applied to the president of the french republic. it would then be like reducing a public figure on its private dimension - an operation which, in such an important context (the meeting of all the heads of state of the mediterranean sea in order to create a new geopolitical union), would appear very quickly as poor and uninteresting : it would be a testimony of the intimacy in a political setting, a private and sentimental story in a public context.

other reasons make it interesting : it stems from the temporality of the event.
when heads of state arrive one after the other, tv channels usually pick up the few seconds related to their own country, and link them with some pictures of the meeting itself. the succession of the welcoming ceremony could be thus considered as a big database, produced to the care of the media, in order that each invited country could set up its own "album" of the event (of a recollection). in any case, the procession is not thought as a form in itself, to be grasped as a whole. no form of institutional subjectivity could have the will to grasp as a whole this procession : there would be, indeed, no way to justify its existence (the question is : which enunciative form could really produce such images ?). if the grasping takes place, nevertheless, it's only virtually, or rather, in order to be soon or later dissolved or teared apart, dismembered.
